Some things are hard to explain until you've experienced them. The way the air smells on a Puerto Rico beach at dusk. The weight of the ocean breeze. The particular calm that comes from being close to the water. We didn't set out to start a candle company. We set out to hold onto that feeling.
Where It Starts
Luz del Mar was born from our love for the ocean and a life spent close to it. As a couple, we've always found something grounding in nature — especially on the shores here in Puerto Rico. Long walks along the beach, collecting shells and sand, watching the light change over the water. Those moments became the foundation for everything we make.
The name says it all: luz del mar — light of the sea.
How the Candles Came to Be
It started simply. I began making candles at home, experimenting with scents that reminded me of the coast — salt air, frangipani, the warmth of a late afternoon. Jeniffer brought her creative instincts to the process, and that collaboration shaped what the line became.
The more we made, the more the candles started to tell a story — not just smell nice. People noticed. Friends asked about them. Eventually it stopped making sense to keep it to ourselves.
What Goes Into Each One
The Seascape Gel Candles came directly from those beach walks. The shells and sand embedded in each one aren't decorative — they're hand-collected from our favorite stretches of coastline here in Puerto Rico. Gel wax is clear, which lets us work with those natural elements in a way soy can't. The result catches light the way the water does.
The soy candle line is built around the same coastal world: warm, layered scents that place you somewhere specific. Frangipani. Sea salt. The kind of fragrance that comes through an open window near the water.
Everything is hand-poured in small batches. Not as a talking point — because that's the only way we know how to do it right.
Why It Matters to Us
We're not trying to make candles that just smell good. We're trying to make something that takes you somewhere — that gives you a few minutes of what it feels like to stand on a beach with salt in the air and nowhere to be.
